Our Story
Based in the scenic surrounds of Timaru, New Zealand, Gus Leen is an industrial designer with a deep passion for sculptural lighting and furniture. Working from a joinery workshop nestled on his family’s farm, Gus blends creativity with craftsmanship, designing, prototyping, and handcrafting unique pieces that are shipped to customers and stockists across the country.
For Gus, design is more than a job, it’s a journey. Each new creation begins with inspiration drawn from a fleeting conversation, a shadow cast by native bush, or the quiet rhythm of the outdoors. Music is often the first step in his process, helping him visualise the mood and movement of a piece before putting pencil to paper. From there, it's a quick sketch, then into CAD software to bring ideas to life.
His design ethos centres around symmetry, rhythm, and balance, three guiding principles that give his work a sense of harmony and flow. But it’s not just about aesthetics. Gus is known for obsessing over the smallest details, tolerances, finishes, joinery, elements that many might overlook, but which matter deeply to him. “The thought of an incomplete aspect of a design leaves me unsettled,” he says.
Once the technical drawings are complete, the real hands-on magic begins. Amid sawdust-covered machines and the hum of tools, his ideas take shape, evolving from plans into tactile, ambient products designed to enhance spaces with warmth and style.
A strong believer in responsible design, Gus carefully selects materials from suppliers who prioritise sustainability, ensuring his work treads as lightly as possible on the environment.
Gus hopes his creations bring beauty, atmosphere, and joy to the spaces they inhabit, whether in homes or commercial spaces. With each new piece, he invites you to share in the story, craftsmanship, and passion behind his designs.
Stay tuned, there’s always something new on the workbench.
